I think the operative word is "smart" here. The last network animated
series I remember is NBC's "Father of the Pride", starring John
Goodman as the father of a pack of white lions owned by magicians
Siegfired & Roy, but (a) it was written as if it came out of the
1960s, except for the campy S&R bits, and (b) it was CGI, which made
it incredibly expensive.

Besides, Fox tends to be a little more lenient with animation than it
does with live-action - if American Dad was a live-action show, I
doubt it would have lasted five episodes, much less five seasons, with
the ratings it got when it started.
