DEAR HARRIETTE: While I was driving my son to school one
morning, he asked me what a prostitute is. Thinking hard how to
answer the question, I told him that it is what happens when
both men and women receive money in exchange for sex. My son was
quiet, then he said, "I know what a prostitute is, Mom. I just
wanted to know what religion Marge is on 'The Simpsons.'" It was
funny, and I tried not to laugh out loud; however, afterward, I
asked him how he knew what a prostitute was. He told me he got
it from "The Simpsons." Hmm.

Dear LuAnn: There are a few lessons for you here. First, it's
wise to ask questions of your child when you are unsure as to
why he is asking you a particular question. "Why are you asking,
son?" could be a great followup question. Another could be,
"What do you think a prostitute is?" so you could hear your
child's understanding and respond based on his level of
awareness and maturity.
That "The Simpsons" prompted your son's question speaks
volumes. While you may not be able to control everything your
child watches on TV, you do have the responsibility of paying
attention and engaging him in discussion about what he
sees. Monitor your child's television time. Use parental
controls to ensure that what he does watch has your
approval. And watch his favorite shows with him.
As far as "The Simpsons" goes, though a cartoon, it's definitely
adult TV. Pay attention to learn what other adult TV shows are
slipping under your radar.
