I apologize for the cruddiness of the text below, but I was thinking
about the quality of the Simpsons since the first year there was a
second major sunday night cartoon player (please I know the critic was
around in the mid 90's but the Simpsons was in its true prime back
then).
What I decided to do was rank the shows based upon one criteria only:
How watchable the episodes from those seasons are in 2008. If there
are episodes from two shows that are about the same on the watchable
scale then I would just rank them the same.
Here is my ranking from the years in question. Obviously if a show
does not exist or is on hiatus I will not include it in the rankings.

Ok for some explanations.
96-97: One of my favorite Simpsons seasons. Every episode was funny
and had a wonderful timeless quality to them. KOTH was good but it
had some really tough competition that year. Also KOTH was gaining
its footing that season as Hank seemed to be about 20 years older than
the Hank Hill we know today.
97-98: Cracks in the armor for the Simpsons but still a great season.
I can think of Mojo, the Handgun episode, the Movementarians, Lisa's
angel. All had great writing and still are halarious. KOTH was a
close second with the Peggy Feminism episode, the Mega Lo Explosion,
and the fishing with cocaine episode.
98-99: This is where things start to get interesting. Ok so KOTH's
third season is one of the best seasons of ANY show and can stand up
to the 3-5th seasons of the Simpsons. There are just too many
classics to mention because they are all classics. Ok Escape from
Party Island was only ok but it was still great and is only average
when compared to the other episodes. Futurama was going through some
growing pains itself and was hit or miss, but was still a great (if
too short) season. The episodes that I did not like much the first
time they aired (like fear of a bot planet) are ironically the ones I
enjoy the most now. The simpsons episodes from this year is when the
show really started to get noticably bad to me. Ok so there were
about 3 "classic" episodes: Wild Barts Cant be Broken, Sunday Cruddy
Sunday, and Lisa Gets an A. There are about 15 that if I could only
see about 5 minutes of them I would be happy. Homer to the Max, Old
Man and the C Student, Maximum Homerdrive, and Kidney Trouble all fall
into this. Decent sections of the show but the rest is just annoying
and aggrivating to watch. The first season of Family Guy does not
hold up at all to me. I dont find most of the episodes funny, and the
pace of the cutaways drives me crazy.
99-00: I am calling the Futurama episodes like the typical television
season, and the episodes including the slurm factory, the titanic, and
the mars university are some of my favorites. Hermes Groove Back is
the ultimate Futurama episode. So Futurama wins this seaon hands
down. KOTH has many many episodes that I can watch a million times,
but it has a few that are yawners to me. Aisle 8A, Part II:Peggy
Hill: The Decline and Fall, and Cotton's Plot just do not hold up for
me. Still, there are some classics including the Hanky Panky and High
Anxiety combo, Bill of Sales, and Transnational Amusements Presents:
Peggy's Magic Sex Feet. Family Guy was getting better in its second
season and has some highly re-watchable ones like There's Something
About Paulie, I Am Peter, Hear Me Roar, and Brian in Love. Some of
the others are pretty lame, but it is showing that it has life. The
Simpsons in season 11 has few redeeming episodes. Whenever the local
cable station is showing these episodes I usually just delete them
without even trying to watch them. Lets see... what episodes were
good from this season? There were some funny moments in The Mansion
Family and It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad Marge, and Faith Off was probably
the overall best episode. Otherwise it is just annoying to watch
Hello Gutter, Hello Fadder, Saddlesore Galactica, or Kill the
Alligator and Run. Just a bad bad season.
00-01: Lets just say the Simpsons starts to really stink here, and
there are not enough episodes that are re-watchable to pull them out
of last place no matter who else is in the game. Ok Futurama Vs
KOTH. Futurama had Cryonic Woman, War is the H Word, and Amazon Women
in the Mood. All as funny today as they were 7+ years ago. KOTH had
The Buck Stops Here, The Exterminator, ney Boy and Hamster Girl: A
Love Story. Still overall Futurama has more that hold up over time
while KOTH has some that I dont watch anymore like Ho Yeah!, When
Cotton Comes Marching Home, and Yankee Hankee. Family guy had a short
run during this period but had many good episodes. The Brian in
Hollywood ones and Mr. Saturday Knight were great. Just that there
were only about 10 episodes of this "seaosn".
01-02: This one is close but Futurama eeks out a win over FG and
KOTH. Simpsons had one or two good moments but even they claimed to
jump the shark at this point.
02-03: Futurama is the champ. Look back and you will see some
creativity that dorks can truly appreciate. KOTH had some classics
(The Texas Skilsaw Massacre, The Miseducation of Bobby Hill, and Maid
in Arlen), but the show also had some low points. Simpsons...There
are moments... moments.... when I watch these and laugh. not many but
they exist. The Spelling one comes to mind... lets see Moe Baby Blues
had some cute parts... still it is hard to stomach most of these.
03-04: Down to just two for a while. KOTH is a little uneven but
still is the easy champ. I dont even remember the plots of most of
the Simpsons episodes this year.
04-05: Still KOTH by far. I think the Simpsons actually took a step
back this season after getting slightly better in seasons 13-15.
05-06: I kinda stopped watching the Simpsons at this point. I will
watch a little of an episode here and there on Sunday nights, but it
is too painful to sit through en entire episode. If a coworker tells
me the previous night's episode was good, I will try to watch it.
Now, Family guy had 30 episodes this season, and there are some good
ones so that is why it wins. KOTH And AD are tied though AD would
hold up better than KOTH if I could see these episodes in sindication.
06-07: Same as 05-06.
07-08: I actually enjoyed AD the most this year.
